You Don’t Have to Stop Snacking
Some patients are initially concerned about eating with their braces when they first start orthodontic treatment. While your teeth may be sore after first getting your braces on or after adjustment, there are still many foods and snacks that you can enjoy.
In addition to choosing the right foods during any periods of mild discomfort, it’s also important to avoid any food that can cause damage to your wires or brackets. Have no fear, though, there are plenty of food options that are just right for you.
Foods to Avoid
There are some foods that can prove to be difficult to eat during treatment or can damage your braces, such as biting into an apple or corn on the cob. Healthy fruit and vegetables are still any important component of any diet, so rather than biting into them, you can cut them into smaller pieces and still enjoy a healthy snack. Crunchy and hard foods can loosen or break your brackets, so it’s best to stay away from those during your treatment. Sticky and chewy foods can also present a few problems as they can not only loosen or break your brackets, but can get stuck in places that are hard to reach with a toothbrush.
Tasty Braces-Friendly Snacks
Soft foods are the obvious choice for avoiding damage to your braces. However, there are other foods that you can still enjoy, but may need to be chopped or cut into small pieces. Yogurt, oranges, bananas and string cheese are just a few great snack options. Check out our recipe below for a delicious and nutritious smoothie that is also a perfect braces-friendly snack!
Don’t think you have to stick with a bland or boring diet during your orthodontic treatment. There are plenty of tasty foods you can still eat – you may just need to get a little more creative!
